This light novel is advanced reading in Japanese. Its sentences are of medium length and about a quarter of the text is dialogue, but the vocabulary is demanding: you need to know a very large number of words to follow it comfortably, and the vocabulary reaches the highest JLPT level. Much of the difficulty comes from the trade setting, with its words for merchants, coins, grain and furs, and from the archaic, dialect-flavoured way the wolf goddess speaks, so it suits readers who already handle ordinary novels.
MnemoRead measured this book from its full text: how many of the language's most common words you need to follow it, and how long its sentences are.

JLPT word lists
Share of the text each level's words cover, with the levels below it. N5 and N4 are the textbook lists; N3 to N1 are the words common in the novels learners grade at that level. No list covers a whole novel: literary and rare words lie outside it. The book's vocabulary is rated at the first level that covers nearly all of what the whole list covers (98.5%).
