Free Japanese Reading Practice with Built-in Learning Tools
Learn more about our collection
Japanese reading practice is one of the most effective ways to improve your vocabulary, kanji recognition, and comprehension. All books on this page come from Aozora Bunko, Japan's digital library of public domain literature. Read works by legendary authors like Natsume Soseki, Akutagawa Ryunosuke, and more with built-in tools designed specifically for Japanese learners.
Whether you are a beginner starting your Japanese reading journey or an advanced learner tackling Meiji-era classics, our difficulty ratings help you find the perfect book for your level.
Find Books for Your Japanese Level
Beginner: Start with short children's stories (童話), nearly all by Ogawa Mimei. They are the easiest texts in our Japanese library, easier than the easiest novels learners grade N3, though not graded readers: with N3 vocabulary you know about nineteen words in twenty, and a click translates the rest.
Intermediate: Progress to longer texts: Edogawa Ranpo's later boys' detective novels, Miyazawa Kenji's and Niimi Nankichi's stories, Unno Jūza's science fiction and Natsume Sōseki's Kokoro, which read like the novels learners grade N3 and N2.
Advanced: Challenge yourself with the classics of modern Japanese literature: Akutagawa's short stories, Dazai Osamu, Mori Ōgai, Miyazawa Kenji's "Night on the Galactic Railroad", and Natsume Sōseki's Botchan (坊っちゃん) and Ten Nights of Dreams (夢十夜), with literary vocabulary and rare kanji, like the novels learners grade N1.
Each book's level comes from measuring its text: how many of the most common Japanese words you need to know to understand 95% of it, and how long its sentences are. Japanese levels are set on modern novels learners have graded: intermediate begins around the easiest they grade N3 and advanced around those they grade N1, so a beginner book is easier than any of them. Each book also shows a JLPT reading of its vocabulary: the level whose words cover nearly all of what the list covers in it, N5 and N4 from the textbook lists, N3 to N1 from the words common in novels graded at that level. Kanji and classical grammar appear in a book's details but do not change its level.
How do we evaluate difficulty?
Our system analyzes each book using Japanese-specific metrics:
- 常用漢字 (Jōyō) — Percentage of standard kanji. Books using mostly the official 2,136 kanji are more accessible.
- JLPT — Rare kanji outside JLPT and Jōyō lists. Fewer obscure kanji means easier reading.
- 文語 (Bungo) — Classical grammar markers. Older literary texts use archaic forms.
Hover over each book's difficulty badge to see its detailed analysis.
