In Japanese, Hot Chocolate on Thursday is an intermediate read in our library. Aoyama writes everyday life in a Tokyo café and in Sydney in sentences of ordinary length, with a modest share of plain dialogue, and a good part of the harder words are katakana loanwords (cocoa, apron, sandwich, turquoise) that an English speaker reads almost for free. What asks for patience is the breadth: twelve linked stories, each with its own narrator, job and setting, bring in more vocabulary than one plot would, much of it on no JLPT list, so a reader will still be tapping on words, though rarely on grammar.

MnemoRead measured this book from its full text: how many of the language's most common words you need to follow it, and how long its sentences are.

JLPT word lists

Share of the text each level's words cover, with the levels below it. N5 and N4 are the textbook lists; N3 to N1 are the words common in the novels learners grade at that level. No list covers a whole novel: literary and rare words lie outside it. The book's vocabulary is rated at the first level that covers nearly all of what the whole list covers (98.5%).
