In Japanese, Sayaka Murata's short novel about a long-serving convenience-store clerk sits at the intermediate level of our library. Its vocabulary reads at the second-highest JLPT level and its sentences are of middling length, some running long, while Keiko's plain, deadpan narration, a fair share of dialogue and a moderate kanji load keep it readable. Much of what there is to learn is the store's working vocabulary (the till, part-time shifts, the night shift, uniforms, restocking), which recurs all through the book, so it suits a reader who already gets through short modern stories with a dictionary at hand.

MnemoRead measured this book from its full text: how many of the language's most common words you need to follow it, and how long its sentences are.

JLPT word lists

Share of the text each level's words cover, with the levels below it. N5 and N4 are the textbook lists; N3 to N1 are the words common in the novels learners grade at that level. No list covers a whole novel: literary and rare words lie outside it. The book's vocabulary is rated at the first level that covers nearly all of what the whole list covers (98.5%).
