This is an intermediate read in Japanese. The sentences are fairly short and the prose is plain, set almost entirely inside one small café, but the vocabulary is broad enough that you will meet a good number of words outside the common ones, such as gestures (nodding, murmuring, looking down) and café and inn terms. Most of the text is narration rather than dialogue, so it suits a reader who already handles the second-highest JLPT level and wants a gentle story.
MnemoRead measured this book from its full text: how many of the language's most common words you need to follow it, and how long its sentences are.

JLPT word lists
Share of the text each level's words cover, with the levels below it. N5 and N4 are the textbook lists; N3 to N1 are the words common in the novels learners grade at that level. No list covers a whole novel: literary and rare words lie outside it. The book's vocabulary is rated at the first level that covers nearly all of what the whole list covers (98.5%).
