In Japanese, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone sits at the advanced level of our library, above all because of how many words it takes: as a full-length novel, it needs a large vocabulary. That vocabulary reads at the second-highest JLPT level, with much of it on no JLPT list, from the book's own coinages to the words of a school for wizards, such as brooms, cloaks, owls and houses; the sentences are of ordinary length, and readers who know the story will recognise the katakana names at a glance. Dialogue fills over a third of the text, and each character has a voice: Dumbledore's stylised old-man speech and Hagrid's rustic dialect take some getting used to.

MnemoRead measured this book from its full text: how many of the language's most common words you need to follow it, and how long its sentences are.

JLPT word lists

Share of the text each level's words cover, with the levels below it. N5 and N4 are the textbook lists; N3 to N1 are the words common in the novels learners grade at that level. No list covers a whole novel: literary and rare words lie outside it. The book's vocabulary is rated at the first level that covers nearly all of what the whole list covers (98.5%).
