The first volume of Eighty-Six is an advanced read in Japanese. Its vocabulary reaches the highest JLPT level and runs past its list: this is military science fiction, and the narration, which is most of the text, is dense with the kanji compounds of war (squadrons, armour, ranks, the fallen) and with the setting's own terms, often a kanji compound glossed with a katakana reading, while a whole squadron of names and call signs crowds the list of frequent words. Sentences are of ordinary length, so the difficulty is the vocabulary rather than the syntax; it suits readers already at ease with modern Japanese fiction, and knowing the story from the anime makes the terms easier to place.

MnemoRead measured this book from its full text: how many of the language's most common words you need to follow it, and how long its sentences are.

JLPT word lists

Share of the text each level's words cover, with the levels below it. N5 and N4 are the textbook lists; N3 to N1 are the words common in the novels learners grade at that level. No list covers a whole novel: literary and rare words lie outside it. The book's vocabulary is rated at the first level that covers nearly all of what the whole list covers (98.5%).
