This is an intermediate book to read in Japanese. Sentences are of moderate length and over a third of the text is dialogue, which keeps the prose light, but the vocabulary is wide: you need a large number of words to follow it comfortably, and some of the most frequent words to look up are specialised terms about a religious group and a manuscript. It suits readers who already handle everyday modern prose and want a long novel to practise on.
MnemoRead measured this book from its full text: how many of the language's most common words you need to follow it, and how long its sentences are.

JLPT word lists
Share of the text each level's words cover, with the levels below it. N5 and N4 are the textbook lists; N3 to N1 are the words common in the novels learners grade at that level. No list covers a whole novel: literary and rare words lie outside it. The book's vocabulary is rated at the first level that covers nearly all of what the whole list covers (98.5%).
