Learn more about our collection
Reading in Latin is one of the most effective ways to improve vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension. On Mnemoread, you can read free Latin books in their original language, with built-in tools designed specifically for language learners — no interruptions, no switching apps.
From readers written for students, such as Fabulae Faciles, to Caesar, Cicero, Seneca, Ovid and Virgil, this page gathers the Latin texts you can read with instant translations, each with a reading level measured from its text.
Where to Start
Beginner: Start with the beginner books: readers written for students, short summaries of Roman history, and the Gospels in Latin, whose words are among the commonest in the language.
Intermediate: Most classical prose sits here: histories and accounts of campaigns, speeches, letters and dialogues, along with epic verse and medieval tales.
Advanced: The hardest books gather rare vocabulary: technical and scientific treatises, satires and novels, learned miscellanies, and even Latin versions of modern novels, whose everyday objects have no common Latin word.
Each book's level comes from measuring its text: how many of the most common Latin words you need to know to understand 95% of it, and how long its sentences are. Levels compare the books of our library, so "beginner" means the easiest we have, not a textbook level. The measure sees vocabulary, not grammar: speeches and poems built from short clauses can sit lower than they read, so start with the readers written for students.
Browse all available Latin books below, sorted by level; the readers written for students, at the beginner level, are the best place to start.
