Ovid's Metamorphoses is an intermediate read in our library, though a demanding one. Its sentences are long and it needs a large vocabulary to follow comfortably, with many rare words for myth, nature and the body, such as nymphs, feathers, hooked beaks and gaping jaws. Our measure counts words and sentence length but cannot see verse word order, which spreads a clause across several lines and makes the poem harder than its level alone suggests, so it suits a reader who already handles prose Latin.

MnemoRead measured this book from its full text: how many of the language's most common words you need to follow it, and how long its sentences are.

How hard this book is

IntermediateAbout 35/100

Easier than 61% of our Latin books

The score rises with the words needed to cover 95% of the text and with sentence length. It is the same in every language. Books within about ten points of each other read about as hard.

In verse: its sentence length depends on how the edition sets the lines, so the score reads the vocabulary alone.
