Alcools is an advanced read in French. It is a collection of verse, so the lines and sentences are short and there is no dialogue, but the vocabulary is demanding: a large share of the words fall outside the commonest French, and you need a very large vocabulary to cover most of the text. Apollinaire's poems lean on poetic and archaic words (sirens, stars, doves, sailors, wandering Gypsies) and drop punctuation, so the sense can be hard to follow even when each line is brief. It suits readers who already read French prose comfortably and want to take on poetry.
MnemoRead measured this book from its full text: how many of the language's most common words you need to follow it, and how long its sentences are.
How hard this book is
Harder than 98% of our French books
The score rises with the words needed to cover 95% of the text and with sentence length. It is the same in every language. Books within about ten points of each other read about as hard.
In verse: its sentence length depends on how the edition sets the lines, so the score reads the vocabulary alone.
